Effervescent tablets

Before healthcare products keep people safe, it’s necessary to keep the products themselves safe!

Whether oral solid dosage pharmaceuticals, drug delivery systems or diagnostic and medical devices, many healthcare products are susceptible to degradation and stability issues.

Airnov is the specialist of controlled atmosphere with deep knowledge in moisture, oxygen and odors management inside healthcare packaging. Contact us for more details on which solution is the most suitable for your specific needs.

Effervescent Tablets

Effervescent tablets are a pharmaceutical dosage unit that dissolves when submerged in water, creating a solution via the release of carbon dioxide. They are made through compression of component ingredients and are, in most cases, somewhat larger than regular pills. Effervescent powders and granules are also in use, although tablets remain the most common product found on shelves of pharmacies across the globe. Hundreds of pharmaceuticals are delivered in effervescent form, from aspirin to cold remedies to vitamins. Effervescent tablets are an important segment of pharmaceutical production and must be treated as such. In order to protect them from external influences and potential damage, special types of packaging are produced by manufacturers such as Airnov. Plastic tubes and desiccant stoppers are the golden standard in the industry.

The benefits and challenges faced by manufacturers

The formulation of effervescent tablets is a comparatively simple one. They rely on an agent capable of releasing CO2 (sodium carbonate and/or sodium bicarbonate) which is then converted into the salt form during the dissolution process. The production of effervescent tablets dates back to the 18th century when salts such as carbonates and tartrates were first employed to replicate the mixtures of naturally occurring mineral waters. Their ease of use and attractive flavor (citrus fruit extracts were often added to the mix) made them popular. To this day, they remain a preferred method of administering everything from cold relief medication to more potent drugs.

Perhaps the main benefit of this formulation is its ability to dissolve completely and evenly. This makes the medicine easier to digest and minimizes the risk of damage to the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. They are also known to promote increased liquid intake which is good for the body and presents the patient with the benefit of being easy to measure and handle.

Much like other substances, these tablets also come with some risks and challenges. Transportation and packaging are commonly the biggest source of issues and should be selected with great care in order to avoid any type of damage to the fragile product. Breakage is a substantial problem, especially with old-fashioned blister packaging. For a time, glass and metal tubes were also in use to try minimizing damage to the tablets. However, with the expansion of the global market and increasing distances that medications travel before reaching the end user, these have proven both cumbersome and expensive. The experts at Airnov have carefully fine-tuned their approach to understanding these problems as well as their solutions. Slim, rigid plastic tubes coupled with our innovative stopper designs protect the product from shock, greatly reducing tablet breakage as products are shipped and stored. These tubes and stoppers have been optimized to maximize protection while minimizing the amount of material used in production.

The risks involved are not limited to physical damage but also extend to the issue of moisture ingress. Since effervescent tablets are by their very nature designed to dissolve in water, any moisture ingress can ruin an entire tube of product. Water can render the active sodium carbonates useless and may also cause welling, crumbling, even mold and mildew. Airnov desiccant stoppers adsorb moisture before it can attack the sensitive effervescent tablets and powders. Tubes and stoppers are also specifically designed to create tight seals, minimizing the amount of moisture that can enter through the closure to begin with.

Uses and benefits of cutting-edge technology

The engineers and innovators at Airnov are focused on keeping up-to-date on recent developments and leading the move into better materials, more reliable production methods, and increased safety. No rock is left unturned and no new technology unexplored. The goal is to maximize customer satisfaction – regardless of drug being administered through effervescent tablets. Removing all traces of outdated materials that lead to bulky packaging and exorbitant costs, the company is oriented toward providing maximum protection without added expenses.

Zero reactivity with the environment is, naturally, imperative. Since, today, most packaging is made from plastic, it is also important to consider its impact on the already problematic level of pollution of our eco-system. This is why the ability to recycle and even re-use is something that every manufacturer ought to consider. Our team is committed to leading the effort against further destruction of our planet. Light yet sturdy, perfectly suitable for easy transportation, made to the highest standard – our products are competitive in each and every category they may find themselves in.

Considering plastic tubes and desiccant stoppers

Plastic tubes & desiccant stoppers have shown to be the optimal packaging for effervescent tablets. Rigid yet light plastic tubes extend brand equity and are perfectly suited for automated filling lines. Airnov offers them in combination with desiccant stoppers that are easily inserted during the packaging process, keeping delivery times consistent.

Their superb control of MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) can be achieved in a number of different ways, depending on the demand of the client. Tamper evident, spiral or half-spiral, easy-opening, or flip-top stoppers can easily be incorporated into the design and are suitable not only for effervescent tablets but also for chewable tablets and lozenges.

Always incorporating the highest standards (GMP and ISO 15378), the engineers of Airnov are available to develop new concepts and adapt them to the requirements of each individual pharmaceutical manufacturer. We are ready to learn and improve and are committed to thorough packaging integrity testing, discovering recycling possibilities, employing efficient cleaning methods, preventing unwanted side-effects, and maintaining the highest degree of durability. Easy, timely delivery and prolonged shelf-life remain of paramount importance throughout.
