Before healthcare products keep people safe, it’s necessary to keep the products themselves safe!

Whether oral solid dosage pharmaceuticals, drug delivery systems or diagnostic and medical devices, many healthcare products are susceptible to degradation and stability issues.

Airnov is the specialist of controlled atmosphere with deep knowledge in moisture, oxygen and odors management inside healthcare packaging. Contact us for more details on which solution is the most suitable for your specific needs.

Cannabis is a plant with varieties producing high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiols (CBD) extracted from the cannabis plant for its effect. Smoked, vaporized, and consumed through food, in recent years it has garnered a good deal of media attention and stirred up quite a bit of debate. Today, medical marijuana is legal and available in certain states of the US as well as dozens of countries across the world. Doctors are able to prescribe it and certain products derived from the plant have gained FDA approval. The medical benefits of cannabinoids can be mental as well as physical but nursing implications (possible clinical consequences) have also been noticed by scientists. Due to their perishable nature, cannabis products require special pharmaceutical packaging. Airnov offers EQius™ packets, desiccant washers, and inserts, as well as plastic tubes and desiccant stoppers to mitigate the risks of moisture, oxidation – and to ensure odor control.

The challenges of packaging medical marijuana

The word Cannabis has two meanings. One is to denote the genus of flowering plants in the family Cannabaceae, namely Cannabis indica, Cannabis sativa, and Cannabis ruderalis. The other is to refer to the extract of said plants that use used as a drug – both for medical and recreational purposes. Research has confirmed that many of these can be particularly useful in healthcare. In fact, the medical benefits of cannabinoids are gaining more attention with each passing year. Still, due to social stigma, the progress in legalizing the substance remains slow and just over 40 countries in the world permit its use in a clinical setting.

Also referred to as marijuana, cannabis is used in a number of different ways – it can be smoked in the form of a cigar, vaporized, or even mixed into food such as cookies. In the context of healthcare, it is usually sold as dried leaves that can then be used according to the doctors’ prescription. The main difference between recreational potency and that employed in pharmaceuticals lies in the concentration of THC. The range for medical products lies between 5% and 15% while recreational substances may contain well over 20% of CBD (cannabidiol). For doctors as well as patients, it is important to strike the balance between health benefits and side-effects. The latter can be difficult to navigate, especially since higher doses can lead to paranoia and other temporary mental disorders. The research is ongoing and, for now, most healthcare professionals are reluctant to administer anything other than the minimal dose.

When it comes to sales in pharmacies and dispensaries, cannabis purchases are normally placed in opaque, child-resistant pouches or bags. Still, this type of pharmaceutical packaging offers only superficial protection and additional measures ought to be taken in order to provide maximum safety for a rather perishable product. Moisture, oxidation, and even unwanted odors can create problems. Companies dealing with the process need to address the issues of safety, compliance, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental sustainability.

Most advanced solutions in cannabis packaging

Pharmaceutical packaging used in storing drugs often differs very little from that employed in protecting cannabis from external factors. Still, due to the product’s unique characteristics, additional measures need to be included in the packaging and transportation process in order to comply with all regulations as well as make sure that the patient receives their dose of undiminished quality. Companies producing medical marijuana also navigate a complex legal landscape, considering FDA approval (or the stamp from any other regulatory body), and take into account nursing implications of medical and recreational potency drugs.

The packaging is another important segment and something which Airnov tends to excel at. The considerable experience of our team and its eagerness to tackle even the most demanding projects place us among the most flexible and innovative competitors in the field. Taking safety and legal requirements very seriously, we do our best to come up with solutions to issues that may appear along the way. From EQius™ capsules to EQius™ stoppers

Protecting cannabis from moisture, , mold, mildew and excessive dryness. Packaging of dry leaves, vaporizers, and extracts, as well as concentrate and edibles each comes with unique challenges. In order to maintain all the health benefits without augmenting the chances of side-effects, Airnov offers three different groups of products that have been tried and tested to comply with the highest standards in the industry.

EQius™ capsules or Equilibrium RH Stabilizers are well suited for situations in which specific relative humidity conditions are necessary for the preservation of the product. These sorbent substances perform both as humectant (desorber) and desiccant (adsorber) – and are able to answer very specific application needs. Sensitive drug forms remain fully protected with the help of either standard or customized.

Washers & inserts present a balanced combination that serves more than one purpose. They are integrated into pharmaceutical closures to absorb any headspace moisture that makes an ingress into the package. These washers and inserts can be efficiently snapped into standard threaded caps – or remain independent, allowing for easy removal. With a tightness guarantee and swallowing avoidance mechanism, they enhance shelf life and offer maximum security.

Plastic tubes & stoppers are another two-part system that offers a cost-effective solution. Sturdy and rigid, tubes are a good way to control MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate). Combined with stoppers, they manage the accurate humidity level for  the product. The simplicity of design is well suited for high-speed insertion and automated filling lines. They are also an excellent way to extend brand equity through offset printing for complex artwork in up to 6 colors.
